Periodontal or gum disease is a pathological condition in which the gums and bone support around your teeth are irritated and inflamed. Periodontal disease starts with gingivitis, which is when soft plaque starts to build up around your teeth, causing redness in your gums and increased bleeding when brushing and flossing. If the soft plaque buildup is not cleaned off, it eventually turns into hardened plaque and tartar called calculus. These hardened calculus buildups tend to push down on your gums and infect the ligaments and bone surrounding your teeth, causing permanent gum and bone loss.
At Ortega Cottage Dentistry, we take periodontal therapy seriously and consider your gum and bone support to be the most important foundation inside your mouth. We strive to make sure all our patients keep their teeth for a lifetime, and start by making sure we avoid periodontal disease.
Unfortunately your gum and bone support will not grow back fully to what it once was after your periodontal disease is under control, but our goal is to help maintain what you have for as long as possible with regularly scheduled cleanings. Periodontal patients may require a deep cleaning and more cleanings per year to help maintain a healthy mouth.
